Hi. Not entirely sure what you mean by "perpetual blooming". I have friends who live in Palo Alto, California. On the back of their house is a climbing 'Cecile Brunner' that has a nice first flush and then seems to bloom lightly through the warm months in summer and early fall; but it certainly doesn't bloom throughout the year. Also, as mentioned, it is the climber, not the bush. Last fall I rooted several cuttings off this plant, btw, and it seems to be quite easy; I think I had about 75% success. Molly's right about the size you can expect. (I lived in Houston for a while.) I still have several white pottery pots that are probably 50 gallon pots, and they would be lovely with a rose like CB. (I got mine from Teas on Bissonet.) If you decide to grow them in pots, choose thick pottery in a color that reflects heat. You might also want to use some moisture polymer granules to level out the moisture in southeast Texas summers. | ||

"Cecile Brunner" is not a small bush in this part of Texas. I garden in Houston, and my "Cecile Brunner" shrub is about 4 feet tall. I had it in a pot for several years; it grew about 3 feet there but is much happier in the ground. | ||

Cecile opens differently at different times of the year. In late fall or when the bud opens under mostly cloudy skies, the petals will be a deeper pink. The slower the petals open, the more they will grow and open. Cecile is simply an exquisite small rose bush that is so loved that its owners protect it from the careless uses of lawnmowers and weedeaters. I hope this is the one for you. | ||

Thanks, Ann. I want to order one but I just want to make sure it is the right one. It has been such a long time ago that my memory may not be serving me well. When I see the close up pictures they just don't jive with my memory. I seem to remember the rose looking more like the petals on a carnation but then I could be remembering it after it was completely open? | ||

Hi, Rebecca, I'd guess that your Grandmother's Sweetheart rose was Cecile Brunner, which is an exquisite pale pink whose petals all unfurl, very unlike modern roses. I'm your age and when I am looking for roses out in the countryside, very often I'm shown folks' family favorite Sweetheart Roses, and so far, every time, it's been Cecile Brunner. I recall being given a bloom of a Sweetheart Rose in southern Germany that was a Hybrid Perpetual, but I've never seen that here. | ||

I am trying to find a miniature(?) rose bush that my grandmother had and she called it a sweetheart rose. I have seen online several possible roses, cocapeer / mlle. brunner, that are referred to as this sweetheart rose but am not sure if these are what I am looking. My recollection is that it's blooms were a pale pink and almost looked like a carnation(?). It was a small bush but then she may not have known how to grow it. any help finding this little rose would be appreciated. | ||
