Here's an update on the Heritage Rose District of NYC: As of April 24, 2010, we have planted more than 400 heritage roses, in over 12 different sites. I estimate that we have nearly 150 different types of heritage roses, this makes the Heritage Rose District of NYC the largest public collection of heritage roses in the east coast. Every rose planted was a donation from nurseries, public gardens, and individuals. A complete list of our donors is on the website (Heritagerosefoundation.org). I urge you to support our friends when buying roses. The attached photo was taken yesterday (friday, 5/21) of the George F. Harison grave, Trinity Church Cemetery and Mausoleum, near the corner of 153rd and Broadway. This is the planting that inspired the project, these roses were planted in April, 2009. Trinity Cemetery currently has the largest collection of heritage roses. The Morris-Jumel mansion has the second largest collection. Please visit these sites! In the photo: Rose du Roi (original form) to left, "Greenmount Red" to right. Antique irises from Pennsylvania (white). Our "Greenmount Red" was raised from cuttings taken from a parent rose of unknown provenance and identity in Greenmount Cemetery, Baltimore. We are calling this rose "Greenmount Red". Ongoing research on the origin of this rose leads to an 1854 red Noisette 'Beauty of Greenmount' created by the nurseryman/gardener/caretaker of Greenmount Cemetery, James Pentland. Critics from New York City, at the time the rose was introduced, claimed that Pentland was simply recycling 'Fellenberg'. 'Beauty of Greenmount' disappeared from commerce in the late 19th century. It was sold in New York for many years as 'Beauty of Greenmount'. We have planted 'Fellenberg' 20' away for comparison. They are different. Only two specimens of this rose are known to exist in the entire world - the original in Baltimore and our plant in Harlem! Until we can prove otherwise, the rose is known as "Greenmount Red". 'Rose du Roi', a Portland rose from 1812 grew in the gardens of 19th C. Harlem. Our plant came from Vintage Gardens. Vintage has proven that their specimen is the same rose that grew in the gardens of King Louis XVIII.

great photos malcolm! I'm still sorting through the notes, but my scribble tells me that we planted at least 301 roses, 139 different varieties. The Heritage Rose District of NYC is now one of the largest collections of Heritage Roses in the east coast. Thanks to everyone who showed up to help - a good crowd the entire day. And a big THANK YOU to all who donated roses, antique perennials, and pots: Florida Southern College, Antique Rose Emporium, Vintage Roses, Roses of Yesterday and Today, Paul Zimmerman, Sacramento Historic Rose Garden, Wyck, Brooklyn Botanic Garden, Betty Vickers, Pat Shanley, Dagni Senzal, and Marilyn Ornati. stephen |

Just wondering how many of us are planning to attend the Earth Day (4/24) rose planting day in Harlem? I plan to go, along with our greenhouse manager and 4 undergraduate students (who helped produce the roses we're bringing). Hope to see some of you there. Malcolm |
