This year, Canary Bird and hugonis started to bloom April 3 and primula began on April 4. The freeze came April 6,7, and 8 and the blooms freeze dried on the stems. Most of the buds have dropped off since then with one new bloom opening yesterday on primula. Old Blush has managed a few opened buds over the past week.
Suzanne is the only rose I have that's opened buds from unfrozen buds since the cold. (Not bad for a species species cross, even though its parents seem to have dropped their buds.)

I grow both, hugonis and Canary Bird. I also have R primula.
For me they always start blooming in the following order: Canary Bird first, approx one week later primula, one more week later hugonis.
I love them all, but Canary Bird is my favorite, it is already blooming now.
Do you know that if you cut a branch, the flowers last longer then a week in vase.

I had this rose up north and I liked its flowers but I really got a kick out of its ferny foliage. :-)

What a lovely picture! My earliest bloomer is 'Canary Bird', a hybrid of your rose and Rosa xanthina.Canary Bird

Yes, this April has been extremely warm in Switzerland. Last major rainfall was on April 4 and we have been having temperatures in the high 70s. This weekend they forecast about 82F.

A lot of buds are getting ready on our roses. The second one to bloom was Banksiae Lutea, but I have not got a good picture yet to post. By the way, peonies are also 3 weeks early.

What a beautiful rose, Behcet. I take it you're having a warmer year again? Have you noticed more buds on your plants recently?

Sue

Rosa hugonis was the first rose to bloom in our garden this spring. This year on April 17, 3 weeks earlier than in 2005 and 3,5 weeks earlier than 2006.
