Having at the Heritage one of the two SGMCs originally donated by Joyce, (the other is at Descanso) I guess I've had more experience than anyone. And I guess I've sent near bushels of it to nurseries. It wants heat, although it will tolerate some shade. It does not want its roots disturbed during its first years. After that, it would be hard to kill it! Further, it doesn't mind pruning to keep it under control. In this particular thread, I don't believe its powerful, haunting clove fragrance has been mentioned nor its absolutely continuous bloom. It has even been trying to bloom in our recent freezing weather!!! As to sources. Amity now says they have a good supply of SGMC... and, to my knowledge, Sequoia does not have SGN, but does have SGMC. I know. I gave it to her! Also, I know Carolyn has mixed up SGMC with SGN in the past. |

I hope it's SGMC, as Jeri's posts have made that rose a mandatory acquisition. I have Rosa moschata and this has, as a band from last spring, larger size single flowers not (yet?) in clusters. Why isn't Gregg carrying the Joyce Demits noisettes? He has Phil Ediger's Noisette that he says was passed on to Joyce, but not these other three. |

Sue, that poor rose has had a pretty mobile history. It spent at least 2 years in a 5-G pot. Then we planted it by the electric pole, up near the street. There, it was endangered by Cable workers, so we moved it down to the bottom of the retaining wall. It CLEARLY loves heat, because it EXPLODED down there -- quickly obliterating the pathway. So we dug it up yet again. It fell apart into three plants (and this is a rose that does not like its roots disturbed). Two were planted in the current site, and I think it's now been there for four years. It gets only afternoon sun there, but seems to tolerate that OK -- and it has deepened the shade behind it (as we'd hoped) making it a good location for epiphytes and fuchsias. This is definitely a rose that will not give its best until it's had a few years to build up good hefty roots. But once it does that, it's a wonder. Here's what it looks like on TOP of the arbor:

Jeri, that second photo took the breath right out of me! How long did it take you to grow SGMC to that size? What a beauty! Baldo, two different roses. SGMC is single and the noisette is double. Where I might have had interest in growing SG Noisette, Mel's comment steered me away from it (though I intend to arrive at SJHRG one of these days, Mel, and ask you to show it to me in person!). |

Julie: I bought Secret Garden Musk Climber from Sequoia a couple of years ago as it. I don't remember seeing it as a Noisette. Maybe Caroline got confused about the names. My specimen is just like the blooms that Jeri posted. However, it will be a while before my plant attains the height of the plant that Jeri shows in the picture. Baldo |

Julie -- It's hard to say, because I don'r really know Secret Garden Noisette very well. But I find it difficult to believe that Vintage is selling SGMC as SGN. They're not offered SGMC in the past, tho they've offered SGN. Here's Secret Garden Musk Climber, if this is helpful to you.

Oops. Must engage brain before mouth. I looked on HMF and they show a double for SGN. |

Hi All - I purchased SGN from Sequoia this summer. I was looking for SGMC and when I was placing my order I asked about SGMC, they said that is what they had listed as SGN. What I received is a rose with large single strongly fragrant blooms - is SGN a single? |

Sue, I really DO want to travel up your way. Not gonna happen, tho, until the weather on the entire West Coast grows a bit kinder. After my cold weekend in Visalia, I'm not ready for another cold trip yet. :-) As for Setzer, I'm bummed that it's not available. But I can take some cuttings off mine, if you like. I don't think she'll miss 'em. She grows like a house afire. |

Jeri, it's just a ploy to sway you into making a trip up north to visit! I thought it might succeed if it had to do with roses and rustling your way into a rose thicket AND it was some time way into the future. Mel, thanks so much for the details on the noisette. You just moved me a firm step closer to Setzer. Any thoughts on where I might find it since Gregg doesn't carry it? |

Secret Garden Noisette is in the Heritage along with SGMC. It is a rather average noisette (not a tea noisette). For us, it is a middle size climber with near white blooms. Da Kernel |

Sue -- Why would you want to be dug out? Surrounded by big vertical roses is a pretty good way to live. I don't think you can go wrong with Noisettes, but if you're going vertical, let me mention "Setzer Noisette," another Joyce Demits foundling. It's got vigor and disease-resistance to spare. I brought it home from the HRF Conference in El Cerrito, and bless the fact that I was able to get it. |

Sounds like not much is as extraordinary as SGMC, so of course I'm adding it to the garden. But you know I love noisettes and this one is tempting. I'm shocked that once my garden filled up, my rose addiction didn't fill up with it. These two roses will put me at 20 for winter purchases. I keep thinking, "Go vertical!" You'll have to come north to dig me out in a year or five. Hopefully, you'll bring other friends of ours along! |

Hi Sue -- As I understand it, they did both come from the same garden (since destroyed). I've been told that SGN isn't as extraordinary as SGMC -- but it is, after all a Noisette. It's got to be pretty good? Jeri |

I've just discovered that Joyce not only found Secret Garden Musk Climber but also Secret Garden Noisette (for sale at Sequoia). Can anyone tell me more of the background stories of these two roses? Am I correct in assuming they come from the same garden and is it on the Mendocino Coast? Does anyone grow SGN? Thanks. |
