Hi Pat -- HRF last spring is a wonderful whirlwind of memory. Sort of like a particularly nice kaleidoscope. :-) Wish you could have been there for GROTW. I think the thing about it is that it offers us a wonderful opportunity to get together for an orgy of rose talk. Some year, if they can't find a suitable "Great Rosarian," they could just open the room for us to party. And we're finding lots of other things to do, around that weekend. Hi Jeri, Don't know if you remember me from the HRF Convention last May. I very much wanted to attend the Great Rosarian Award Presentation, but wasn't able to. Thank you so much for posting this wonderful photo. Viru & Girija spoke to the Manhattan Rose Society last June and were guests at my home. They are absolutely delightful and I am very proud to call them my friends. Pat |

By the time all the versions of this photo were taken, we were all laughing pretty hard -- because poor Carolyn got stuck taking shot after shot with at least 10 digital cameras. The occasion was immortalized A LOT. <g> jERI |

The annual Huntington Botanical Garden "Great Rosarians Of The World" seminar was held this past Sunday (San Marino, California, USA). Viru and Girija Viraraghavan of India, the honorees/speakers were kind enough to join a group of us for dinner on Sunday evening. On Monday, we "kidnapped" the Viraraghavans, and swept them off to Visalia, where we all had a good visit at Sequoia Nursery, and lunch at Mr. Moore's favorite "hangout," to celebrate his recent 99th Birthday. It was a wonderful meeting -- particularly as Viru is using some of Mr. Moore's cv's in his gigantea and clinophylla crosses. I thought you might enjoy one picture from a genuinely wonderful day.

Hi Cindi, I started out first by making sure the living room window was going to have an attracive view of the garden, then I took a sketch of the area and walked around it(over and over again)trying to imagine what it would look like if I had already planted it using hoses for rose garden layouts. Yes, I did take my life in my hands when I went up on the roof (it is metal) but I figured I wasn't ever going to spend my time enjoying the garden sitting on a hot metal roof so I came down to earth. I think views from windows are important, even in the winter. I am in a rural area (deer, rabbits, mice etc) and had to first make the garden deer proof and combine this with a fence. The fence is a farm and field type( wooden posts 10 feet appart and wide steel mesh in between) I started on the properties perimeter and first planted a climber on all the posts, then two OGRs inbetween and then a medium modern shrub in between the two OGRs. Then on either side of the shrub, a peony plus lilies. Because we get gale force winds I divided the property into rooms with fences and planted Ramblers to grow along the top so they baffled the winds and then made a path along them and designed a large rose garden in which I put the more modern shrubs. I have an orchard which has the most shelter, in there I have Ispahan planted as well as one in the windy area. The one in the windy area is 4 feet tall in the sheltered area 7 feet tall. Wind really does keep roses down, even the older ones. So as you can see my garden consists mainly of roses, peonies and lilies, plus zillions of campanulas! Not to mention mulch, mulch mulch everywhere. photo shows a "rose room". |

Cindi, they are cute as speckled puppies! Sam, Hi. Don't you think that the blooms are wonderful? Hello Stephen! I live in upstate South Carolina near the N.C. border and at the foot of the mountains. A beautiful place that you should visit sometime! Not far from Ashdown roses. Carol |

I have not exactly figured that putting in here either. Unless its like uploading a picture from your own computer and just linking it like you would load it into a storage tank. Like picture trail. Let me see about this. Oh...and it took all of 3 seconds to plug my scan disk into the little hole in front of the computer. Just like you said....months ago.
this is worked...aint they cute. |

Cindi, I've been up on the garage roof to look at the garden and take pictures. I have to get up there a couple of times a year anyway to clean the gutters. This is supposed to be an old picture of the back garden from the garage roof. It's not showing up on the preview for some reason. Will it show up here? <img> |

I want to hear more about your garden too Lynette. Its is "convincible". How are you spacing them and layer them. No doubt about it. Your cuddled in roses. I have from the get go always been so afraid of the starting point. How did you start it off. Got an overhead view. Anybody ever got on top the roof and took a picture. |

Lynette, I think that one picture there should convince anyone of the value of old garden roses! Liesbeth, I hope someday to see Bermuda. I've always been fascinated by its climate, a tropical climate so far north. --Ron |

Hi, I am a real novice and have a lot to learn about IT! After a gale over the week-end sunny skies have returned to Bermuda. Our roses perform best in our 'Winter', with bigger blooms and better colour (yes, I still use good old English spelling...)This is also the season for 'slipping', i.e. taking cuttings and propagating. The Bermuda Rose Society sells the rose bushes to the public and gives them away to public gardens, cemeteries, National Trust, etc. This provides most of our income. |

Greetings, I'm Lynnette,I garden on Vancouver Island in the PNW. I only have an acre of land but have managed to squeeze in over 800 roses mainly the OGRs. I give talks to garden clubs with slides to encourage gardeners to use the OGRs in their garden. Plus dispell the many unkind myths about the OGRs. |
