Meanwhile, one pair of Barbier's Francis photos were moved to Fauque, as the user confirmed he had made them in Sangerhausen. All pictures of the Fauque Barbier show the plant in this rosary. What we need are pictures and descriptions from other sources, to compare with this specific plant (which I believe is misidentified). Etienne, do you have pre-1933 descriptions of Francis somewhere? |

Both photos on HMF are from Sangerhausen (the 2 last on the right): http://www.helpmefind.com/rose/pl.php?n=49264&tab=10 so it seems that the rose is fading creamy. |

Wow, thanks for the explanation Anne. I can't imagine losing all those roses. Did you reorder and wait again?? This could become costly?? |

Kathleen, the whole shipment of 27 rare roses was condemned and destroyed because the plant pathologist at the inspection station said he found a fungus infection (Phoma spp.) on one of the roses. I protested that I didn't think Phoma was a recognized rose pathogen but he wouldn't listen. I pleaded to have the infected rose taken out and the others released but he said that the others could turn up with the infection later. I thought that was why we have the roses in quarantine for two years but evidently he didn't trust the state inspector to do his job so I lost them all. If the roses had gone to the inspection station in Seattle, as they always have, instead of being taken off the plane at San Francisco, I don't think this would have happened. The people there are wonderful to work with. They did find beetles on some of my plants once but they gave me a choice of having them fumigated or having them destroyed. I chose fumigation and got my plants. I couldn't detect any damage from the fumigation. Other than that, the only probems I have had have been several cases where the exporter failed to include information indicating the absence of potato cyst nematode worms on the phytosanitary certificate. I sent them the fax number for the inspection station and a new, correct certificate was promptly faxed. During the delay, the people at the station watered the roses. |

The 'Francis' I ordered last year from Martin Weingart was in the shipment that was confiscated by the inspection station in San Francisco so I don't have one in my collection. I have one on order from France for the fall. I'll post two photos that I took in Germany in 2003. The first one is from the lovely town garden in Bad Langensalza, not far from Sangerhausen. Martin Weingart has his nursery there. This rose looks double to me. The second is from Sangerhausen and appears to be creamy pink in the center and semi-double. It will be very interesting to see what shows up in France. |
