Here is another bit of information on Hybrid Teas bred by Geschwind, reprinted in the "Rosen-Almanach 1979-1980":

Apparently Geschwind offered his three red HTs 'Satanella', 'Irrlicht' and 'Rudolf Bartak' for sale in fall 1901, and, by 1903, at least 'Satanella' seems to have been bought by an American:

[Reprint of a letter by Rudolf Geschwind to the "Praktische Rathgeber, 1901, p. 403-4]
"...I have a Hybrid Tea: named Satanella, equally beatiful and glowing as my cultivar Gruss an Teplitz; a second: Irrlicht, scarlet, often shaded fire-red, large, well double, blooms continuously like a Monthly Rose. The third, Rudolf Bartak, densely full, fine form, floriferous, crimson, often shaded fire-red, glowing scarlet-crimson when adequately watered and in cool weather. She is a seedling of Monsieur Désir. Regarding Satanella, she is of purest colour, without shading and more double than Liberty, which latter I find nothing so remarkable as is being heralded.
Now comes the crux. I want to sell these three roses already in the course of this autumn, and such that, the buyer (of course on his own cost) will come here and see the roses blooming, as the shipping of valuable seedlings before they are purchased is catchy. What do you say to this? - The price for the seedlings would be 500 Crowns for Satanella, 200 Crowns for Irrlicht, and 300 Crowns for Rudolf Bartak, together 100 Crowns (ca. 800 Marks), which is certainly not exaggerated."

[Reprint of an article by A. Steffen in the "Parktischer Rathgeber, 1903, p. 245-6]
"...Satanella, a fiery hybrid tea, has unfortunately been abducted by an American, but Geschwind has more in his stocks; we will be able to add one of those in the next years into our trial grounds."

Maggie? Or maybe even a US rose under a different name?

I found the latest edition of ROSA MUNDI, with its focus on the Geschwind roses, to be excellent! Great job on assembling these international authorities

Hi alida

Your going to find it hard to believe but I have trouble getting excited about GaT as a rose in itself.

It has done well for me but not anywhere in the same league for all round value as Louise Odier who she is planted beside.

It grows in my zone to about 2-1/2 feet and is not that vigorous - somewhere I read it is debated whether it is a china or not - based on it's growth pattern here and when compared to my chinas and bourbons I am presently believing that arguement.

Riku,
I may have ordered 'Geschwind's Orden'-either that, or 'Gem of the Prairies'. They look alike to me.
I have 'Prinz Hirtzenprinzen', it grew over the
trellis this year but no blooms yet. The 'Himmelsauge' I got was too small and didn't make it over the winter.
How does 'Gruss an Teplitz' do for you?

The blooms on my 'Maggie' are not as red-how is
the scent?

I should mention even though the Eugene I have bloomed an immature bloom I would be hard pressed to say it looked anything like those blooms I have seen in rosa mundi and helpmefind. This one is cupped and mid red tending towards nearly scarlet.

Unfortunately I only have a poor picture of it. They do not list it on their site this year.

I still am waiting for mine..
But onto Eugene Marlitt-is it just a theory
that Eugene is the same as Maggie? I have
'Maggie', which does have thorns, but very
little. Is the 'real' Eugene Marlitt supposed
to be thornless?
Riku, do you have Nymphe Egeria? Which ones
do you have or have you ordered?

I received my Rosa Mundi on Monday. I must admit it has been a long time since I read any rose periodical from cover to cover but this edition kept my interest from the first page to the end. Avery interesting edition.

It was very topical for me as I have been snapping up Geschwind as soon as I can find them grafted (95% from Palatine in Canada) to see how they do in zone 3.

And for my two cents worth, the rose I have labelled Eugene A. Merlitt from Palantine (planted this year and bloomed an immature bloom) has thorns.

It's in the mail (really!).

I'm not sure how fast they arrive once sent, but I do know that they're on their way. (I'm waiting, too)

it's a beauty.
